The nicest thing about "The Tobago Highlights and Folklore Show" tour
was the itinerary and the lovely lady tour guide. She was knowledgeable with the right mixture of information and lighthearted delivery. And she was very observant.Had it not been for her, twice we would have had an accident, for the driver of the bus was the worst driver I have ever had the misfortune to be driven by.Two near misses were two misses too many. One I may have closed my eyes to,two I cannot and have voiced my concern to the Columbus representative. As the driver was the worst,so was the bus. There was something sticking into my side,I had to either sit on the edge of the seat,or be poked constantly, and to add insult to injury, had to pay for the privilege! The folklore show at the Cultural Centre where a welcome fruit or rum punch would await us turned out a bit of a disappointment. The Centre was too cold and the acoustics deafening. It would make Carnegie Hall proud. The calypso band was very competent but played far too long, every time I thought end, finally, nope, it was not,it just went on and on and on,the same beat. The dancers were well trained and the shortest of them with the thickest waist and the biggest bum was the best mover,a lovely mover.
I never had any punch, fruit or rum, they had run out of everything when it was my turn to indulge.Judging by the look on everyone's face I did not miss much.
The short not even ten minute drive from the Centre to the terminal was a revelation. The road.the only nod to the 21st century I had observed on the island, other than a school,a lovely greenish, square glass building. For two or so km the lush green scenery, the perfect road, cars passing by at some speed...you could have been in any European country. And then the gentle hustle and bustle of the port of Scarborough, the capital of Tobago, that is still firmly rooted in the 50's and may it remain there,in true Caribbean spirit, for years to come.
